Recently, when visiting one of my best friends in Linz, we utilised our Interrail passes to take a day excursion to Salzburg, because…why not?! We didn’t visit many of the city’s most recognised sites, but we did eat delicious vegan food, stroll along a gorgeous river, and enjoy the atmosphere. I’ve realised that this is probably my favourite method to see a city, whether I’ve been there a dozen times or it’s my first time there: choose a culinary destination and then stroll around, generally aimlessly!
We arrived to the sight of surrounding mountains and a gorgeously blue sky. Just walking from the train station into town along the nondescript streets, the colours were so vibrant. It was almost excessive!
We made our way towards the river that flows through the city, the Salzach, and spent some time finding shade along its banks. I was reminded of why I enjoy summer in Austria so much.
The signs advertising nearly every shop, restaurant, and other business in the old town drew my attention. It was evident along Getreidegasse, possibly the most touristy street (Mozart was born there), that they are something for which Salzburg is known. Many are intricately crafted from multiple metals, but I like the more straightforward designs.
Then we on our way to the Mirabell Gardens, made famous by The Sound of Music and connected to the same-named palace. It is so beautifully manicured that it’s nearly terrifying! The statues of naked wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style are also a great addition.
We arrived at our primary dining destination, Heart of Joy, a vegetarian café and restaurant with numerous vegan options. There was soup, curry, sandwiches, salad, and naturally…cake!
Undoubtedly, there is more to see in Salzburg, but for a quick day excursion, this was sufficient. Call me a slacker traveller if you must; I’m fine with that.
