H.I. NYC hostel in New York City
With Central Park just two streets away and a metro stop right around the corner, staying at the HI New York City Hostel in Manhattan’s Upper West Side is a great way to see the finest of New York City.
It’s also in a terrific part of town; we found several great spots to dine and drink right outside the hostel’s door. Malaysia Grill, located just around the block, serves traditional Malaysian fare including Roti Canai and Nasi Lemak at a very reasonable price. Bourdain recommends Xian’s Famous Foods in New York City, where you can have Xian style hot noodles and excellent dumplings in spicy noodle soups. On the Columbia University campus, you’ll find a pretty laid-back beer parlour called Arts and Crafts Beer Parlour that’s just a short walk away.
HI New York City Hostel offers a comprehensive choice of amenities to make your stay as pleasant as possible. It’s a fantastic in-house cafe/deli where they serve enormous sandwiches stuffed with delicious ingredients like smoked salmon, pesto chicken, or meatballs marinated in tomato sauce.
There are around 667 beds in this massive hostel. Dorms, not individual rooms, are available for couples here. There are dorms with 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 beds for men, women, and couples. For instance, the nightly rate for a bed in a 12-bed female dorm is between $50 and $60 USD. It’s a great value considering the location. It is true that you will be sharing a room with 11 other people, but the beds are quite comfy, the rooms are immaculate, and the beds are spaced far enough apart that it doesn’t seem overcrowded. Fresh linens, blankets, and a good pillow are provided by the hostel. For your personal items, each bunk has a locker adjacent to it. Bring a lock with you.
HI New York City’s complimentary activities are an additional perk of staying there.
You may take a free walking tour of Brooklyn at twilight to see the sunset over Manhattan from Dumbo, or you can attend the Thursday welcome party where you can meet other hostel guests over free beverages. Tours of the greatest speakeasy bars and rooftop bars in New York City are also available for a very low price, with rates starting at only $10. I went to one of their free (by contribution) improv comedy events in the basement, where we were entertained for an hour by a group of up-and-coming New York City comics. Overall, I was thrilled, even if the calibre of the performances was mixed. The hour went by in a flash.

Breakfast? Bacon and egg bagels!
They also provide bagels stuffed with bacon and eggs in the traditional New York way. Coffee, juices, fruits, cereals, and muesli may be be found at the cafeteria, as well. When the weather was pleasent, we’d go to the cafe for breakfast and eat on their expansive patio. After a trying day of sightseeing in New York, we found the garden to be a peaceful place to unwind with a good book. A water fountain and a bird feeder attract a wide variety of birds, making it a relaxing place to sit and watch them bathe. There is also an inside dining space, as well as two lounges with lots of sofas where you can relax, read, or use the free wifi. There’s also a pool table area and a decent laundry facility for all of your laundry. They also have a spacious, well-equipped kitchen on the ground level, which is wonderful for cooking because New York can be rather pricey.

Additionally, the staff was kind and helpful throughout our stay. When compared to employees from European hostels, I felt them to be more informal and remote, but I suppose that’s just a difference in hostel cultures.

The Best Hostel in NYC
The Local NYC hostel, located in the LIC neighborhood of Queens just a few subway stops from Manhattan and Brooklyn, is a great alternative for a low-cost stay in New York City.
You can see the Manhattan skyline from the hotel’s rooftop patio, which is a nice perk.
An on-site bar and spacious lobby with long tables and plenty of comfortable sofas and chairs make this hostel the perfect place to kick back, relax, read a book, or work on your laptop. They have a huge exhibition room in the back where they display the work of local artists, as well as a projector that plays movies. All the rooms are well-maintained; they include individual plugs, reading lights, and lockers where you may keep your belongings safe. Guests are given complimentary locks by the hotel staff.
A number of outstanding pubs and restaurants can be found in the immediate area, including my personal favourite, The LIC Market where you can sample a wide variety of salads as well as sandwiches such as “Slow Cooked Pork” ($13) and “Grilled Cheese.” ($15) Aunt Rosie’s Diner, an old-school diner serving classic New York City comfort cuisine like Beef Brisket, Chicken Parmagiana, and Chilli over Rice, is also a nice alternative for those on a budget.
YMCA of the Bronx
East Williamsburg in New York City’s trendy East Williamsburg neighbourhood, the Moore Hostel is a popular choice for its big (high ceilings), warm rooms, budget hotels helpful staff, well-equipped kitchen and a beautiful common area (complete with Netflix), as well as complimentary tea and coffee. It’s a little quieter than the HI NYC hostel, but it’s also less sociable. It’s a little out of the way, but it’s perfect for exploring Brooklyn, my favourite borough in all of New York City.
Yo! Times Square, or OYO for short.
The OYO Times Square Hotel is the final stop on our tour. This New York City low-cost hotel is one of my top choices simply because of its prime position in the BUDGET HOTELS heart of Times Square. The rooms are modest and modern, with a large bed, flat-screen HDTV, Bose sound system, and a desk to work from. Free amenities and a shower are a plus.
Again, this hotel would be my choice based only on its location and accessibility.
Apart from the incredible 50 percent off their Times Square hotel, all of OYO Hotels’ locations in the United States are currently on sale! Use the Relax50 coupon code to get a 50% discount.
