An Old English Village Named Chewton Glen in Hampshire
Favorable Conditions: Rousing in a Treehouse
When Chewton Glen opened its spas in 1990, it set a new standard for health and wellness. The spa and fitness centre occupy a vast amount of space (and above ground, too! ), with the latter boasting a nearly unparalleled panorama of the rolling lawns and the stream that serves as the de facto border between Hampshire and Dorset. The grand dame needed a little adjustment, though. Spa decor have been given a much-needed facelift by designer Anita Rosato. The Roman-style mosaics and yellowed Doric columns that once surrounded the 55-foot pool have been removed (though they will be much missed by some).
Everything has been given a fresh coat of white paint to make it seem modern, both outside and within the hydrotherapy spa, with the addition of some eye-catching turquoise sunbeds for some added flair. The treatment selection has been narrowed down to emphasise quality one-on-one care, such as a massage that concentrates on problem areas, a customised facial utilising Natura Bissé products, or a one-of-a-kind hour of scrubs and wraps made with Oskia’s own in-house oils and salts. You get to decide, basically. Special treehouse massages are available on the terrace of your room, and spinning classes are held in the garden. In a lot of ways, this time-honored establishment surprises you with its agility.
Reading, Berkshire; Coworth Park
Excellent for: shining majesty
Leave any notions of rustic chic at the door; Coworth Park is a whole different animal, complete with a crew that uses headsets to communicate and a finish as gleaming as the line of Range Rovers in the driveway (there are a lot of heels, lipstick and suits in the dining room). The spacious white Georgian manor home is groomed perfection, just 45 minutes from London, on a 240-acre estate on the border of Windsor Great Park, complete with four-poster beds, big bathrooms, and smokey wood floors. Outside, there are several converted barns, a group of cottages (perfect for families), a rose garden, tennis courts, and the show-stopping eco-spa.
The pool is really sleek, with ginormous amethyst crystals along the walls and music playing submerged. Additionally, there are steam rooms and saunas that are reminiscent of private sanctuaries. Carol Joy collagen facials, spirulina wraps, outrageously energising eucalyptus exfoliations, and the relaxing Insomniac’s Dream massage, which involves a mass of intense scalp work to settle down a racing mind, are all on the menu, and they all give precisely what is required. A perfect Hot To Trot pedicure followed. The restrooms for changing are a pleasure in and of themselves, but don’t forget your hairbrush! Whether it’s a brand new Mason Pearson or a Tangle Teezer that’s seen better days, the guards will grab it, transport it to the main hotel, and place it in a package fit for a princess. That’s the type of place this is.
Locale: Lime Wood, Hampshire
Favored by: discerning eaters
Lime Wood is located down a tree-lined road with meadows on each side, after passing through the picturesque but extremely touristic town of Lyndhurst (all red brick and timber) on the border of the scrub-like and heathery New Forest. Tweed-clad valets will carry your luggage and car in the middle of July and show you to your room without so much as a hello. The two-bedroom Forest Cottages are perfect for families, but the resort’s natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere also make them perfect for a romantic getaway or a getaway with the gals.
You’ll find 10 treatment rooms and three types of pools (an indoor ozone-treated one, an outdoor hot tub, and a hydropool overlooking the forest, with floor-to-ceiling windows and a log-lined sauna next door) if you can drag yourself away from the gift shop, which sells unusual items like wooden Finlay and Co sunglasses. The Bamford treatments will calm and relax you, while the Voya seaweed leaf wrap will leave your skin feeling silky smooth. Superfoods abound at the Raw and Cured bar, but many diners flock for mega-chef Angela Hartnett’s delicious dishes like ewe’s curd with roasted vegetables and grilled turbot with heirloom tomatoes, white beans, mint, and saffron. There’s a smoking shop right in the hotel!
Hotel Fairmont Windsor Park
The ultimate in lavish extravagance
Located on the border of Windsor Great Park and with 40 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, this country manor hotel knows how to make a royal impression. The path to the luxurious hideaway begins with a picturesque fairytale bridge over a lake, where drops of water from a fountain in the centre sparkle in the sunlight like pearls. You’ll quickly realise that the hotel’s main selling point isn’t the rooms or the restaurant or even the bar, but rather the vast, high-tech spa on the ground floor. Spread across 2,560 square feet, it combines the soothing atmosphere of a luxurious spa with cutting-edge technology. Facilities include the first multi-person cryotherapy chamber in the UK, which can treat up to five clients at once, as well as 18 treatment rooms, a hammam for six, an indoor pool measuring 20 metres, and a Japanese ashiyu foot ritual bath.
Margaret Morgan, a South African designer, was responsible for the hotel’s decor from top to bottom, although her work was particularly impressive at the spa. There’s a Himalayan salt room and a hydrotherapy vitality pool, both of which have discreet nooks like the latter’s pink Himalayan salt wall, which is lighted to create a mystical glow and steadily saturates the area with its curative salts. Reported health advantages include improved breathing, a more positive disposition, and better quality sleep. There’s also a quiet area with low lights and plush loungers that include weighted blankets for optimal stress reduction and restful sleep. Do yourself a favour and use a timer.
Even more impressive than the standard Fairmont spa experience is the Fairmont Windsor Park Royal Signature Ritual, which is not offered at any other Fairmont location. Included in this package are shiatsu-inspired stretches and a hydrating facial, selected from among the world’s most effective massage techniques by the spa’s in-house therapists. Hand-blended custom teas and honey are offered at several tea stations throughout the resort, and the ritual also incorporates elements of Japanese, Ayurvedic, and European wellness traditions. The Yin Bespoke Tea house mix with rose, calendula, nettle, and rosehip is the finest of the bunch.
Located in Lucknam Park, Wiltshire
Top Choice: Rustic Appeal
This 500-acre Cotswolds estate is a Jane Austen–esque English idyll at its finest, complete with wooded walking routes, croquet on the lawn, tennis facilities, bicycles for rent, and a very chic equestrian centre. Hidden beyond the walled gardens, the Espa spa is just as magnificent, featuring a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pools, an outdoor saltwater plunge pool, and thermal houses. Haslauer Reflective Sunlight Therapy, available only at this hotel spa, simulates the transition from morning to evening sunlight, providing vitamin D without the risk of exposure to UV rays, making it an ideal choice for the winter months.
Worcestershire; Dormy House
Ideal for: taking it easy
It cost £10 million to restore this posh 17th-century farmhouse hotel, but today its 40 rooms are all uniquely decorated in magnificent colours by Todhunter Earle (who also created the interior design for Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire). It’s a great touch that there’s a guest-only fitness centre next to the main sleeping areas; this means that you could, in principle, go for a treadmill run at midnight. The Garden Room’s superb food produced with local ingredients (try the green-apple soufflé) and the Potting Shed, a cosy bar with a sizable drinks list, ensure that you won’t want to leave. Regardless, the salt steam room, the lavender and juniper saunas, and the indoor infinity pool will help you relax and let go of your cares.
Calming treatments like their truffle facial are created by Temple Spa, a West Sussex-based boutique firm known for its all-natural products. The Silent Night Sleep Treatment includes a pressure-point face and back massage, as well as lavender and chamomile oils, and is guaranteed to put you to sleep. The log fireplaces, sun terraces, pre-treatment drinks, and post-massage snacks are nice, but the friendly personnel and other amenities are what really set this spa apart.
Cornwall’s Scarlet and White Flag
Ideal for a rustic retreat
All adults are welcome at this wood-and-glass hotel with a view of Mawgan Porth’s firm-sanded, perfectly flat beach. The clifftop hot tubs at sunset are a must, as is a morning swim in the reed-cleaned pool following a relaxing Ayurvedic-inspired routine in a tent. Milena will give you a comprehensive organic pedicure using Pinks Boutique products as you sit back and sip lemon verbena tea from a leather chair. You’ll even get to take home some cruelty-free polish from SpaRitual. The nutrient-rich, light-of-touch, hand-blended oils used in the Honest trademark facial are created by Hampshire skincare business Natural Wisdom, and the facial’s emphasis on massage will appeal to spa-goers who have grown weary of using too much product.
The three- and four-night wellness retreats provide more than just a fast cure; guests may pick from options including stress reduction, anti-aging, improved sleep, and increased vitality. Nordic walking with the laid-back Katie, yoga with Mara, who incorporates helpful somatic movement stretches into her practise, and several coastal treks are great ways to get some exercise and work up an appetite for the inventive dishes prepared by chef Tom Hunter. Indulge, but then cleanse your system the next day with his Ayurvedic spa meal designed to aid digestion. There is agood ttitude among the staff, and I can’t think of any British hotel that offers a quiet room specifically for meditation.
Bath’s Gainsborough Hotel and Spa
Perfect for modern takes on traditional medicine
It’s easy to see why everyone in Bath in 2015 was so psyched about this 2015 arrival. The city’s thermal waters may be enjoyed in this manner, and such establishments can be found nowhere else in the United Kingdom. The waters are so hot that they must be cooled rather than heated (they bubble up from an artesian well directly from the aquifer that lies beneath the city, at temperatures ranging from 69 to 96 degrees Celsius), making a soak in them a profound and luxurious experience. The Roman Baths, upon which the city was established, are just underneath the modern, sensitively constructed, and brightly lit colonnaded bathing atrium.
As the Victorians were constructing an addition to the Royal United Hospital, one of the many prior occupants of this structure, in the 1860s, they stumbled upon them for the first time. The Thermae Bath day spa is also fed by thermal springs and has a rooftop pool, and the nearby Roman Baths complex is also worth a visit (it is amazing: big, old, mysterious, however the waters are untreated so you are not permitted to contact them). You won’t find a more exciting new spa in Britain if you’re looking for seclusion, first-rate treatments from the renowned spa-hotel brand YTL (whose other locations include Pangkor Laut in Malaysia), an excellent Asian-inspired restaurant, and beds so comfortable you won’t want to get out of them all night.
The hotel is shiny, massive, and ostentatious. Itis not going to win any awards for innovative or unusual architecture, and the mood is unfortunately a touch corporate, but it’s just what well-heeled Americans are looking for on their city holiday. It may sound harsh, but limiting access to hotel guests to between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. each day helps keep the spa from being too crowded. You can spend an hour making your way through a series of pools, each one progressively warmer, cold shower hoses designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, steam rooms, saunas, an ice cove, and, finally, a main atrium pool outfitted with double seats and powerful massage jets, the ultimate of which are overhead shoulder blasters. You may choose between drinking soothing lavender-scented water or little liquid chocolate injections, and the staff will be there to remind you how to use the circuit. What is the point, if any, of this? The pools themselves are great for relieving stress simply by floating and goofing off in them, but the mineral-rich water also has other health benefits, such as helping with dry skin, relieving joint pain, easing muscular tension, and reducing the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. This is why spas provide individual aquatic body treatments, where you float on your back while being gently stretched and swished by a therapist in the water.
Signature massages that leave you smelling like lemongrass are another highlight, as is the Aroma Bar, where you can create your own sachet of aromatherapy-oil-infused salts (use them in the sauna). Careful planning and careful execution have resulted in the kind of spa hotel Bath has long deserved. It has intelligence and emotion. Everyone working here wants you to have a nice time and is fully committed to making that happen. It’s hard not to think the Romans would be pleased.
Spa at Calcot Manor, Gloucestershire
Recommended for: the whole gang
The feeling of being safe and supported here is akin to being held by a close friend who also happens to be an expert at soothing a fussy infant. Many new moms have shown up here after being absent for a while. There are a total of 35 guest rooms, 13 of which are designated as family rooms. These rooms range from standard doubles to two-story suites with a separate children’s wing and two full bathrooms. The hotel’s attention to detail in caring for children is evident in the rounded corners, blackout curtains, and high-tech monitor connected to the front desk.
Spa is one of the best in the country and has everything a family may need, including a steriliser, high chairs, cribs, and changing mats. The essential back, neck, shoulder, and scalp massage is helpful for sore shoulders from sitting at a computer for long periods of time, and the Aromatherapy Associates Rose Facial is another popular service. In addition to the 220 acres of countryside to explore and the dedicated trim track, there is a terrific tiny gym, punchy studio lessons (ranging from yoga to hula hooping), and an indoor heated pool with views of Laurie Lee fields. Bicycles, including tow-alongs for younger riders, are available for check-out. Exhaust yourself, then relax with a protein shake, some fresh juice, or a glass of champagne in hand while soaking in the outdoor hot tub, warmed by a nearby burning fire. In the same way as before having kids.
House in Barnsley, Gloucestershire
Methods that delay or prevent ageing
This Cotswolds beauty teamed up with Dr. Geoffrey Mullan of the London skin care clinic Medicetics to open a new clinic that specialises in collagen-stimulating therapies, anti-wrinkle treatments, and dermal fillers. Get away from the hustle and bustle of city life while getting the rejuvenation treatments you’ve been wanting (such lip enhancement, face sculpting, or the removal of stretch marks) by making an appointment now. Expect simple, expertly cooked meals like smoked-haddock and pea risotto and Tamworth pig belly with green beans and apple chutney from The Potager restaurant, which is located in the hotel’s grounds, which are a lovely mix of formal lawns, sun-trap terraces, and kitchen gardens.
To enjoy a summer evening meal in the grounds, inquire about The Temple. The rooms are warm and inviting thanks to the plush duvets, the classic stone fireplaces, and the fresh mint in the rooms that guests may use to make soothing herbal teas (borrow a DVD from the large film library). All of the treatments at the spa, which is decorated with dry stone walls and sprigs of herbs strung from the ceiling beams, are performed with Aromatherapy Associates’ all-natural, essential-oil-based products. Relax in the outdoor hydrotherapy pool, sauna, or steam, or have a nap in one of the most attractive rest rooms in the world thereafter. There couldn’t be a more tranquil aftercare plan.
Country Estate in Soho, Oxfordshire
For the most part, those who want to party the most
Nick Jones, creator of the Soho House, has outdone himself again, this time bringing his brand of rustic chic to the Cotswolds. Next-generation Cowshed, Soho Farmhouse is a members’ club/hotel/hamlet that is as close as you can get to an American ranch in London. Ingeniously, the rough-around-the-edges aesthetic (giant cartwheel lights, mounted cow horns, troughs as sinks in the loos) is perfectly in keeping with the carefree, genuine vibe of the establishment. Among streams and gorgeous meadow flowers, in one of forty wood cabins, you’ll find your own Little House On The Prairie complete with a steel bath on the veranda, rocking rockers, a wood heater, and a kitchenette stocked with handmade biscuits and whiskey. Maybe you’d rather stay put forever.
If you’d rather stay indoors during the colder months, you can skip the movie theatre, tennis courts, crazy golf, and stables in favour of the spa’s beautiful boathouse fitness centre, studio, indoor/outdoor pool, steam room, and sauna. Using a blend of lavender, lemon, and myrtle (a natural sedative), the Sleepy Cow Body Treatment works to alleviate tension in the spine before delivering a powerful foot massage and some deep cranial pressure work on the scalp that will have you almost nodding off. The chill out space is bright and airy, with a fireplace perfect for sipping Prosecco in front of while catching up with friends; there’s also a Josh Wood hair salon, comfy couches, and throw blankets. Perfect pedicures, old-fashioned tub rituals, cleansing mud rasuls, and the best-selling Udderly Gorgeous pregnancy treatments are just some of the Cowshed’s specialties.
You may while away an afternoon in the treatment rooms, which have bare brick walls and white-painted tongue and groove, before stopping by the deli for a freshly squeezed drink and the shop for some exquisite home goods, such as Stanley flasks and Tweedmill blankets. Planned bike rides and hikes are available, but the true fun is having drinks delivered in a vintage milk float while imagining you’re stranded in the woods and battling for your life in the most sophisticated cabin ever conceived of.
Exeter’s Yeotown
Ideal for: a thorough washing
Consistently excellent vinyasa-flow yoga instructor Mercedes Ngoh Sieff and her handsome surfer husband Simon constructed this beautiful renovated property near Barnstaple. They’ll push you to your limits at the Yeotox, a weekly Wednesday-Sunday detox and fitness retreat. There is an emphasis on mental health alongside physical health; as Simon puts it, “reducing the weight of being, as well as shedding weight,” which you will do (most visitors lose between 3 and 5 pounds). You’re given a mental detox by being told to stop overthinking and by engaging in activities like meditation, which are aimed at quieting your thoughts and helping you develop a more positive view.
Daily seaside treks shatter hazy minds with sea air. Athletes may run on the beach with the help of trainers, while the less active can stroll at their own speed. Sessions of energising core exercise, yoga-inspired stretching, and qigong for body strength are also available. At the end of each day, guests may relax their tense muscles with a massage from one of the area’s unpretentious therapists and a steam in the on-site sauna. Every item on the broccoli, orange, and ginger Yeotini and spring green pea soup–free, dairy-free, wheat-free, gluten-free, caffeine-free, alcohol-free, and meat-free–menu is delicious. Don’t let all your hard work in the health department go to waste; sign up for Yeotown Life’s online health recommendations at the end of the week.
Lake District, England; Gilpin Hotel and Lake House
This is the best option if you want to:
Over 30 years ago, when this hotel first opened its doors, it was one of the few in the Lake District that catered only to those seeking opulence. Prior to that, tourists had to make due with damp slate cottages and packed lunches because the whole idea of visiting the Lake District was to climb its magnificent fells and leap from rock to rock across its roaring waterfalls. That’s why the Jetty Spa at the Lake House is so special; it’s a rare indoor paradise. It is exquisitely crafted for two, with the aim of helping its occupants forget about their troubles and rediscover each other in a peaceful setting. Aromatherapists will mix oils to your liking, so feel free to brainstorm new combinations like black pepper and mandarin or frangipani and ylang-ylang with your therapist. While these are being prepared, you can take a stroll through the gardens and end up at a private pool and sauna.
The next stop is the spa itself, a wooden cabin in the Scandi style that hangs over Gilpin Lake. As a skilled therapist takes away stress in your thoughts, you may stare past your feet at the moorhens flipping bottom-up through an open door leading out to the ocean. After that, relax in the cosy boathouse with some afternoon tea, a spread of sandwiches and sweets, and more breathtaking lake views.
